Mermaid Help Needed

I'm confused about the directions for the shoulder edge. The directions say "work edge stitches along shoulder similar to the edge along the lower edge of the jacket". This seems to mean that the edge stitches and shoulder stitches are worked the same although when I do this, the shoulder edge doesn't look right.
I'm stopped - although I guess I will go on to a sleeve while I'm waiting for an answer from a Mermaid expert.

I worked the edge stitches on the shoulder the first time, but didn't like that when I seamed the sweater. The next ones I didn't do the edge stitch and was much happier.

At the beginning of the sweater - a WS row which ends at the bottom would say "Knit to last 3, p2, k1
". When you get to the section that says "work edge stitches along shoulder similar to the edge along the lower edge of the jacket" - a comparable row would say "K1, p2, knit to last 3, p2, k1". So you basically do the same pattern in reverse at both ends. I haven't seamed my sweater yet so I may not like the results but this is how I interpreted the pattern.

Thanks to both of you. This is the first kit I've ever made so I've had this idea that I must follow the directions exactly. After I read fiberfanatic's message, I realized that I wasn't going to go to knitters hell for making a change, so I did. I imagine I'll have to reinforce the shoulder but that's not a big deal. Thanks rickilynn for the explanation. It will no douby come in handy as I work my way through my mermaid.

Hi Gayle sorry have been away. I am at the first armhole of my mermaid. This is the large. for the neck edge on the Right Side row knitting towards the neck edge... Last 2 stitches. yf sl1 purlwise put yarn back and knit last stitch. Then knitting the next row, knit all stitches and you get a lovely edge. The stitches at the bottom do according to her instructions. When sewing it up it will be easier as it has a trench on the front. I use mattrass stitch to sew up my garments. Hope this makes sense.
