According to my LYS the USA distributor is trying to work out the details for selling the refill kits in the States.
At least you know for certain the yarn will work for the patterns- so far I'm having difficulty finding anything with the same 'crunchy' feeling- everything seems to soft I'm afraid the flare will disappear.

I'm pretty sure that the yarn is J&S shetland jumperweight.
Try the shetland cones of yarn from Harrisville. They seem to be really close. i have also knit two out of the norwegian yarn finull garn from rauma. It is just a little thicker but I prefer that to the yarn in the kit.

For the English members of this KAL, I think kangaroo are selling the refill kits. I have found Jamiesons spindrift a pretty good alternative and they have some lovely heather colours as well as solid colours.
Cucumberpatch UK is selling the refill kits, also :-).
I've also found Brown Sheep Naturespun Sport to work out well for the mermaids I've made. But thanks for the heads up!
Thanks for letting us know about the refills. Also, thanks to everyone for sharing some information on alternative wools.
It is Shetland wool, but HF uses more than one supplier of Shetland yarn. Some colors are the spinnery's standard colors, others are her exclusive colors.
