Need Encouragement

I have to confess that I have been sitting on a pile of yarn waiting to become a Mermaid for almost a year. I agreed to knit a second Mermaid for a friend and have put if off by compulsively knitting socks. Many, many socks. I need to find the energy to knit something that takes more than a week to complete. Any suggestions?

Knit on Mermaid for one week (approximately one pair of socks) then knit socks for a week, the a Mermaid week, etc until done. I rotate projects this way since I get bored very easily.

Try knitting Mermaid four days weekly and knitting socks two or three days per week. I recommend "Waving Lace Socks" (currently on my 2.25mm needles in Sage Shepherd sock yarn) from Spring 2004, Interweave Knits; it is also available in the new book "Favorite Socks."

I found the second (and then the third) Mermaids went a lot faster than the first, as I knew what to expect from the pattern. And I loved watching the sweater emerge. Perhaps give yourself something as an incentive when you finish the Mermaid. Or is it that you really don't want to knit it for your friend?

As the, well, procrastinating knitter of a previous recent post, I understand. Since my post I've finished half a sleeve by working on it only during my commute and in social situations and working on designs and fair isle and such during my evening "concentration" time.

I agree with all the ideas above... do something to break up the garter-stitch, small-needle monotony, or crank that baby out with the promise of a great present for yourself or maybe a nice dinner out with your friend!

Aw come on Holly, you cranked that first one out in no time. You can do it, one row at a time. I make a deal with myself. I tell myself I can work on the project of choice if I first knit so many rows (choose an obtainable number for your time limit) first. I find once I start to knit on the dreaded project, I just keep knitting. I don't even get to the other project most of the time, because I want to keep working on the one I was avoiding.
