New Member =)

Hello All!

I'm new & this is my first knitalong. I purchased the mermaid in colorway #6- slate & purple, still waiting for her to be arrived from UK. Can't wait !! I have a few questions here if anyone of you don't mind to help me out:

- i've heard there's millions of ends to weave in during the finishing process, is that true?
-it seems the project level is moderate, but the pattern is hard to understand & the small guage takes forever to knit, do you agree?

Hi, Emily -- In order:
1) There are ends, but if you weave them in as you go along, you won't have to do them all later. There are a number of spots on the web where there are instructions for weaving in your end as you go along.
2) Amy, a participant in this knitalong, has done a wonderful spreadsheet which takes all the pain out of knitting Mermaid. She is my goddess. I knit my Mermaid in just over a month. If I hadn't lost my instructions for posting to this blog, I'd upload a picture, rather than hijacking the comments!

It is super easy to minimize ends on Mermaid. There is a slip stitch edging every other ridge on the bottom, so simply carry the two yarns you aren't using up under the slip stitches and you will only have ends when you join new balls of yarn. If that doesn't make sense, let me know and I can take pictures.

Amy's spreadsheet does make the pattern much easier to understand. As far as taking forever, yes it is a small gauge, but because it is garter stitch, using the spreadsheet, it is actually very easy knitting (in that you don't have to pay a ton of attention). I find that I don't get bored with this project as easily as other sweaters because of the unique construction, so that makes it go quicker.

Let us know if you have other questions. It is a great project, and I'm doing the purple so I can assure you it looks great!

Actually, on the weaving in ends issue, I just realized Amy had already posted some suggestions and pictures here: http://hannealong.blogspot.com/2006/04/mermaid-adaptation.html
